Scrum Team Training
Get your whole team up to speed on Scrum, teaching them everything from roles to artifacts (to the definitions of terms such as ‘role’ and ‘artifact’). This workshop helps ensure that everyone on the team is ready to go Agile.
This virtual, one-day training quickly gets up to nine people primed to do scrum with existing or new Scrum teams — without the costs of bringing in a trainer, the travails of travel, or the lameness of relying on YouTube videos.
We come to you virtually. No recordings. No canned lectures. No PowerPoint.
The Basics
Whether you’re looking to transition to Agile or need to introduce (or re-familiarize) a number of people with Scrum all at once, our Scrum Team Training offers clarity, focus, and access to all the tools people need to become contributing team members. While we always recommend that everyone — particularly aspiring Scrum Masters — invest in more in-depth training, we understand that that’s not always possible financially or logistically.
If your situation makes enrolling in one of our other courses challenging, or If you’re looking to offer a group of new hires a condensed training with the same instructor with whom your company has previously worked, this day-long course is a good option.
Scrum Team Trainings are scheduled regularly; just sign up for the one most convenient for your team(s).
During each training, participants will learn the basics of Scrum using Scrum. That means these are practical learning sessions in which engaging activities instruct through experience. You won’t need to take notes, or listen to lectures, or — god forbid — watch any PowerPoint presentations. We teach everything from the Scrum framework to reaching a shared ‘definition of done’ via on-your-feet exercises.
In advance of the training, you’ll receive a box containing all the materials you’ll need for the day. You’ll also receive a link to pre-course learning materials. Each participant can go through the full set of modules in roughly an hour.
Each training session includes scheduled breaks about every hour and a half. There are fifteen minute breaks at around 10:30 am and 2:30 pm. We also break for lunch around noon for 45 minutes — please consider having lunch brought in, as this isn’t long enough for most to go off site for food and return in time.

What You’ll Learn
- Understanding Agile: Scrum is just one of many Agile approaches. We’ll discuss what all Agile approaches share in common, and what makes an approach Agile.
- Scrum Framework Overview: We’ll teach you the Scrum workflow to build your understanding of the whole process and the details of each step.
- Scrum Artifacts: Discover how to use product backlogs, sprint backlogs, sprint burndowns, and release burndowns, plus other optional artifacts such as task boards.
- Scrum Roles & Responsibilities: What does a ScrumMaster do? What makes for an effective Product Owner? Get familiar with the roles required to run Scrum and learn how to tackle the responsibilities of each.
- Scrum Meetings: Learn the ins and outs of each scrum meeting type —sprint planning, daily standup, sprint review, sprint retrospective, and backlog refinement — along with tricks to make each run smoothly.
- Self-organization Ball Game: Self-organization is a bedrock element of Scrum. This fun exercise helps participants experience firsthand how and why teams are better off managing themselves.
- Agile Estimation: The team estimation game gives participants a solid understanding of relative estimation and how it helps an Agile team assess the size of their backlog successfully. It’s also a tool they can bring back to work with them for use during backlog refinement and sprint planning meetings.
- Agile Antipatterns: Out in the trenches, Scrum team members need to be prepared to identify and defuse the obstacles that impede them. These ‘Agile Antipatterns’ may be diabolical, but your kung fu will be strong.
- Definition of Done: Scrum allows you to ship a working product at the end of each sprint. In order to do that, a team must have a shared understanding of how and when they consider something ‘done’.
Still have questions?
- What if I have more than nine people to train?
Scrum doesn’t work with teams larger than nine people. Ergo, as our training uses Scrum to teach Scrum, neither will our training. If you have more than nine people you want to train, you’ll need to break the group into smaller teams of four to nine people each. Each team will get their own box of supplies from us but you’ll need a separate room for each team.
- How long is the workshop?
The workshop runs from 9am to 5pm. Sometimes we end a bit early, but we never end later.
- Do participants receive any certification for completing this course?
Sorry, no. While this course contains similar content to our Certified ScrumMaster course, there’s no certification involved. Check out one of our other courses if you want participants to earn certification.
- What do we need on our end to make this work?
You’ll need a quiet room that’s big enough to comfortably fit your team while seated at a table facing each other. Most meeting rooms will work perfectly. Since we’ll be collaborating via video conference, the room needs a stable internet connection, a webcam, and a screen everyone on the team can see at once.
- What happens if we have internet connectivity issues during the workshop?
Curse you {insert name of megalithic cable company here}! Alas — rarely — this happens. If it happens to you, you can join the next scheduled workshop at no charge or we’ll credit your original form of payment the full amount minus a $150 materials / processing fee per team.
- What if we need to reschedule?
If you need to reschedule after you’ve already booked your training, you can change the attendance date for a $100 processing fee per team.
- Can you run this workshop in person at our location?
So nice of you to ask! Yes. Get in touch and we can discuss your specific needs.
- If the full team attends this training, do I still need to send our ScrumMasters to your Certified ScrumMaster training?
Our Certified ScrumMaster training is more intensive than this course, which is really geared for Scrum team members. We recommend that ScrumMasters and others seeking a more in-depth knowledge of Scrum take our CSM course or our CSPO course.
- Do you offer any discounts?
An early-bird discount is available but we’ve done all we can to make this course as affordable as possible for everyone, so that’s it.
- Do all my team members need to be in the same location?
Due to the interactive nature of this workshop, your team must all be in the same room for it to work.
